Indian Head Penny in Hoodoo and Conjure

The Indian Head Cent (1859-1909) stands as one of the oldest curios in African American folk magic. This copper penny serves as a powerful spiritual tool for protection and law work, functioning as an "Indian Scout" or lookout who guards against unwanted attention from authorities.

Spiritual Significance

Native Americans earned deep respect in hoodoo tradition for resisting colonial domination and sheltering Africans who escaped slavery. This legacy established them as great helpers, scouts, and warriors in the spiritual realm. The Indian Head penny embodies this protective spirit, with the copper coin keeping away "coppers"—police, IRS, social services, and other governmental authorities.

Within the Spiritual Church Movement, the Scout is identified with Black Hawk, the Sauk and Fox warrior known as "The Watcher on the Wall" (referencing Isaiah 62). Unlike the Buffalo Nickel's warrior protector, the Indian Head penny serves primarily as an early warning system and vigilant lookout.

Traditional Uses

Threshold Protection: Nail Indian Head Cents into thresholds or around door frames. Drill and nail through each cent, or hammer two nails beside each penny and flatten them across each other forming an "X" to "X-out the Laws." Use four coins for homes, nine where illegal business is conducted. Dress weekly with Law Keep Away oil.

Corner Protection: Drive Railroad Spikes at the four corners of a building, anoint with Law Keep Away and Indian Spirit Guide oil while reciting Psalms 1 and 18. Cover each spike with an Indian Head Cent face-up. Sprinkle with graveyard dirt from a deceased policeman to seal the work, then urinate on the spikes to set the guardians in place.

Path Protection: Dress coins with Indian Spirit Guide oil and bury heads-up under a thin layer of dirt across paths leading to your property. Recite Psalm 91 over each cent and call upon Black Hawk to watch over your land.

The Indian Head Cent's power combines copper (linked to law enforcement), Native American imagery (representing scouting protection), and ancestral warrior spirits to create vigilant spiritual guardians.
