Rose of Jericho (Anastatica hierochuntica) - True Biblical Desert Plant

This is the authentic Anastatica hierochuntica, the true Rose of Jericho native to the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa. This is NOT the commonly available Selaginella lepidophylla (false Rose of Jericho) found in most metaphysical shops in the United States.

Critical Distinction:

The true Rose of Jericho (Anastatica hierochuntica) does NOT open or change when placed in water. This is a dried botanical specimen that remains in its natural desiccated state. It is valued for its historical, spiritual, and symbolic significance, not for any physical transformation.

The false Rose of Jericho (Selaginella lepidophylla), native to North America, is the variety that opens dramatically when placed in water and is commonly used in American magical practices. That is the plant most practitioners are familiar with and use for "resurrection" rituals. These are two entirely different species with different properties and traditional associations. We sell this plant in our shop as well.

Historical & Spiritual Significance:

Anastatica hierochuntica holds profound significance in Middle Eastern and Christian traditions. Known in Arabic as Kaf Mariam (Mary's Hand), legend connects this plant to the Virgin Mary, who is said to have held it during the birth of Jesus. Medieval pilgrims brought specimens home from the Holy Land as sacred mementos and symbols of faith.

The plant's Hebrew name, shoshannat-Jericho, references the biblical town of Jericho where it grows in the surrounding desert wadis and sand depressions. Early botanist Henry Baker Tristram described it as "a small ligneous cruciferous plant" gathered by pilgrims as a relic, noting its association with scriptural references including Psalms 83:13, where it may represent the "wheel" or tumbleweed of the desert.

Botanist James A. Duke documented its sale in Middle Eastern markets as "Kaff Mariam" throughout Qatar and other Arabian states, where it maintains its traditional role in folk practices.

Traditional Uses:

In Middle Eastern folk traditions, the true Rose of Jericho is used for blessing, protection, and fertility work. It is kept in homes to invite prosperity, positive energy, and divine protection. The plant serves as a powerful spiritual symbol of resurrection, faith, and sacred feminine energy connected to the Virgin Mary.

Its primary value lies in its authentic provenance from the Holy Land and its centuries-old associations with biblical history and Christian pilgrimage traditions.

Each specimen is a complete wild-harvested plant with natural variations in size and form, preserved in its dried desert state.
