Walpurgisnacht, or Walpurgis Night, is a traditional Germanic festival celebrated on April 30th or May 1st. It is named after Saint Walpurga, an English missionary canonized on May 1st and said to have helped convert the Germans to Christianity. In pre-Christian times, Walpurgisnacht was a pagan festival that celebrated the arrival of spring and the awakening of nature. However, over time it became associated with witchcraft and the supernatural. According to folklore, on this night, witches, demons, and other dark forces would gather on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains in Germany, to hold their annual sabbath.
During the sabbath, the witches were said to dance, sing, and engage in various rituals and spells. The Brocken was also believed to be the site of other supernatural activities, such as werewolf transformations and ghostly apparitions.
